We think of creative progress as linear—to achieve is to reach toward the future; failing is to fall back into the past. We have been taught to create, consider, and critique art based on a timeline, and our narrative, as artists and audience, is neatly plotted out by revelations-per-annum. That we put pressure on documents to represent the whole of what we are thinking stultifies the understanding of what it is to think, what it is to be human.
