INTRODUCING MIHA GANTAR
In our modern times, we frame the process of making art in terms of consistent, capitalist growth. We think of creative progress as linear—to achieve is to reach toward the future; failing is to fall back into the past. We have been taught to create, consider, and critique art based on a timeline, and our narrative, as artists and audience, is neatly plotted out by revelations-perannum. The creative mind is three-dimensional, however, a constantly evolving field. That we put pressure on documents to represent the whole of what we are thinking stultifies the understanding of what it is to think, what it is to be human. In order to grasp a musician’s ideas, we would be best served by playing all of their sound objects simultaneously to replicate the simultaneous push-and-pull of their influences. What you hold here is special, as close as an object can come to giving us that kind of insight to the broad expanses within a single musical aesthetic. It is not a purist’s document; it’s too human and intimate for that. In all, the chance to experience Miha Gantar’s ideas all together like this feels right; it provides an insight into a complete mind.
- NATE WOOLEY (from liner notes of Introducing Miha Gantar)
“This new jazz calls for listening that embraces the unknown.
- Karl Lippegaus, Fono Forum
“This is one of the most impressive debuts I have ever heard. Miha is a brilliant talent that no doubt we will hear much from in the coming years. Take a listen to this by all means.”
